Another incredible CMWorld conference has wrapped up, and the community can now hit the ground running with all their new ideas and inspiration. In this #ContentChat, we share our top takeaways from the sessions, exchange tips for future presenters or moderators, and highlight some of our favorite extracurriculars to check out next year. If you were at the conference and want to relive your favorite moments, read through our recap and comment if there’s anything we missed. Or, if you were unable to attend CMWorld, check out our highlights below and don’t miss these speakers as they continue the conference track.
Q1: Were you in Cleveland for CMWorld last week?
More than half of our poll respondents were at the conference, with others facing FOMO for missing out. For those that couldn’t attend, #CMWorld kept folks up to date on the latest and greatest from the show floor.

Q2: What was your favorite #CMworld session and why?
Joe Pulizzi (@JoePulizzi) is a must-see, with the community applauding his ability to think both short- and long-term to identify trends early on. He has several books available that come highly recommended by Erika.
That I attended? @JoePulizzi‘s opening keynote.
He covered the shifting trends in content marketing and also the shift in what audiences are really looking for from brands.
Was quite validating to hear it from him.#ContentChat— Jason Schemmel – Speaker & Podcaster #GSDChat🎙️🤯 (@JasonSchemmel) September 9, 2019
Joe always provides an insightful, unique look at the content marketing landscape, near- and long-term. #contentchat
— Jill Golden (@_goldengrams) September 9, 2019
Joe is a legit visionary. He sees trends forming well before the masses do and he’s able to present it in a way that makes sense to most.
A gift I wish I had!#ContentChat

I’ve read all of Joe’s books—several times! And he has something completely different coming out for us this Fall… #ContentChat
— Erika Heald | #CMworld Speaker | Consultant (@SFerika) September 9, 2019
I am hoping that @JoePulizzi shares his slides from his keynote (or better yet that @CMIContent turns it into an infographic) so we can share it with clients and marketing friends. So good and so timely. #ContentChat https://t.co/0cgAieb5AF

Pam Didner’s (@PamDidner) session breathed new life into sales enablement and was packed with actionable takeaways. She’s also a #ContentChat familiar who has taken the hot seat this year—check out the recap from when she taught us how to enable our sales team with content.
A2: Aside from your session on Brand Voice, I looooved @PamDidner‘s session “5 Creative Ways Content Marketers Can Better Support Their Sales Team” – she made sales enablement strategy way more exciting than I’ve ever considered it to be. #ContentChat
— Brandpoint (@brandpointco) September 9, 2019
A2: I loved @PamDidner‘s workshop on #B2B sales enablement! Lots of great actionable tips for marketers, and validated some of the strategies I was already recommending to clients. #ContentChat
— Berrak Sarikaya | Speaker | Writer (@BerrakBiz) September 9, 2019
Pam is AMAZING. And pretty much every sales and marketing team I have ever been part of can benefit from her insights to work better together. #ContentChat cc @PamDidner https://t.co/kwhgugNUAq

@PamDidner is amazing. There’s a reason why she’s presented at EVERY #CMWorld since its inception!#ContentChat

Ann Handley (@MarketingProfs) wowed as always, with attendance exceeding the room capacity. If you want to catch her next year, arrive early.
A2: It’s hard to pick a favorite but I was very excited for @annhandley (and it did not disappoint). Bun! 🐰#ContentChat
— Leah Ryder (@leahryder) September 9, 2019
If you didn’t get kicked out of the room! Her session was PACKED!!!#GetAnnABiggerRoom#ContentChat

Ian Cleary (@IanCleary) is known for providing actionable takeaways, with how-tos and tools to make your job easier. He also reinforced the importance of optimizing current and past content before chasing new shiny projects.
A2a: Whenever I see @IanCleary on a conference agenda, I prioritize going to his session. As per usual, I left with a to-do list, simple yet complete how-to’s for my activities, and a couple of tools I’m dying to use. #ContentChat https://t.co/qNB1Io8BAa
— Erika Heald | #CMworld Speaker | Consultant (@SFerika) September 9, 2019
Yeah, Ian’s simple message of…
“we spend too much time on new content and not enough time on existing content”
…really spoke to me. Don’t keep chasing new bright shiny objects! #contentchat
— Tod Cordill (@todcordill) September 9, 2019
I agree. It’s way too easy to forget about existing content.
Don’t rely on “create it and they will come.”
SEO can be great, but #SEO + Promotion is #BetterTogether. #contentchat
— Tod Cordill (@todcordill) September 9, 2019
Yup. Executives and decision makers LOVE to follow the trends b/c it’s what’s “sexy” and exciting…trying to get more views.
Which is a lot like “exposure” ya know?Do you want exposure…or do you want results like conversions & sales??? 🤔🤔🤔#CMWorld #ContentChat

Christopher Penn (@CSPenn) provided a glimpse of the future with how AI will change content marketing, and the replay video is linked below if you want to check it out.
A2. My favorite #CMWorld session was @cspenn‘s presentation on “How #AI Will Change #ContentMarketing.”
As an ex-engineer #AI is something I was meaning to learn more about and Chris provided a great overview. It got my ⚙️s spinning! #contentchat
— Tod Cordill (@todcordill) September 9, 2019
Thank you, Tod!

A few other recommendations from the community: Jay Baer (@JayBaer), Andy Crestodina (@Crestodina), Gini Dietrich (@GiniDietrich), Brian Fanzo (@iSocialFanz), Andrea Fryrear (@AndreaFryrear), Michele Linn (@MicheleLinn), and Marcus Sheridan (@TheSalesLion).
A2b: On the personal business front, attending @ginidietrich‘s session on business development for agencies gave me the kick in the pants I needed in a few areas, and helped me prioritize some concrete business-building activities on my to-do list. #ContentChat https://t.co/CDyXKyi9tm
— Erika Heald | #CMworld Speaker | Consultant (@SFerika) September 9, 2019
A2: I loved the Failure is Feedback: How to Succeed at Agile Marketing by NOT Doing These Things session with @AndreaFryrear – it was so relevant to myself and some of the opportunities I have seen with Agile and how it isn’t adopted. #ContentChat
— Bernie Fussenegger #Digital360Chat (@B2the7) September 9, 2019
A2: Ooo, can’t choose just one.
I liked @JoePulizzi‘s, @annhandley‘s, @IanCleary‘s, @crestodina‘s, @michelelinn‘s, @iSocialFanz‘s. It was my first time hearing @TheSalesLion live – and I must admit, he left an impression on me. #contentchat
— Michelle Garrett (@PRisUs) September 9, 2019
A2a: I also loved the session with @jaybaer on Voice Content, Alexa, and Smart Speakers. So relevant to our business and as a consumer, to myself and how I use. #ContentChat
— Bernie Fussenegger #Digital360Chat (@B2the7) September 9, 2019

No matter what CMWorld sessions you attend, you’ll always learn something from every session. It’s what makes CMWorld one of the best marketing conferences.
I got an idea in every session, whether it was for me or for someone in my network. Even from the not so great sessions (and there were a couple), I got a “what not to do” idea. #ContentChat
— Penny Gralewski (@virtualpenny) September 9, 2019
To me, this is what separates good conferences from amazing conferences. #ContentChat https://t.co/WpIEb3vcUZ
— Erika Heald | #CMworld Speaker | Consultant (@SFerika) September 9, 2019
Great point…I did get something out of each and every session – another sign of great topics and the value of the conference. #ContentChat
— Bernie Fussenegger #Digital360Chat (@B2the7) September 9, 2019
Q3: For those of you who either presented, moderated, or hosted a session/track at #CMworld, share with us something that you learned from that experience.
Presentations should prioritize the quality of content over the visual appeal, but balance the two as possible. Aim to provide at least one or two actionable takeaways during your session. Remember that audiences want valuable assets like frameworks and templates, not high-quality photography of strangers with an inspirational quote.
A3a: I love a gorgeous photo as the basis for a slide. But the slides that had people grabbing their cameras and excitedly writing notes were the ones with frameworks and templates—things they could take back and put to direct use after the event. #ContentChat https://t.co/iKnQQbDqE5
— Erika Heald | #CMworld Speaker | Consultant (@SFerika) September 9, 2019
Maybe, as long as it’s not something you are going to read or say word-for-word it’s OK to pack your slides with useful stuff? An of course if you are someone doing an inspirational session, it’s different than teaching. #ContentChat
— Erika Heald | #CMworld Speaker | Consultant (@SFerika) September 9, 2019
A3] To succeed at #CMWorld or any other conference,
you must provide attendees with actionable content marketing tactics for the next week and the next year. They deserve value in return for their focused attention!#contentchat #contentmarketing https://t.co/xBINOUmJK8
— HeidiCohen #CMWorld 2019 Speaker (@heidicohen) September 9, 2019
A3: Always, always include at least one or two actionable takeaways that your audience can implement as soon as they leave the room. #ContentChat
— Berrak Sarikaya | Speaker | Writer (@BerrakBiz) September 9, 2019
Marketers love hands-on sessions, which can open the door for future, paid services.
A3b: My brand voice definition + documentation session gave attendees the tools they need to DIY, but attendees came up afterward and expressed how helpful it would be to have it as a facilitated workshop in-house. The neutrality of a 3rd party can be so helpful. #ContentChat https://t.co/ItoMCpNnik
— Erika Heald | #CMworld Speaker | Consultant (@SFerika) September 9, 2019
Stepping behind the scenes can show just how much effort goes into every session.
A3: I moderated for the first time this year, and it was such a great experience. Being behind the scenes just reinforced HOW MUCH CARE & EFFORT y’all put into the sessions. And I learned I love having control of the mic and I’d love to present next year (#goals) #ContentChat
— Leah Ryder (@leahryder) September 9, 2019
And marketers appear to be very invested in learning more about SEO (a potential avenue to explore for future content or services).
A3) That SEO practices are still a MAJOR learning topic for people.
Which tells me people are relying less on social media & ad spend and focusing more on their organic content (which is a good thing)#ContentChat pic.twitter.com/1wPCCie80D
— Jason Schemmel – Speaker & Podcaster #GSDChat🎙️🤯 (@JasonSchemmel) September 9, 2019
Q4: Attending a conference isn’t just about what happens in the breakout rooms. What #CMworld extracurricular activities did you participate in and encourage next year’s attendees to do also?
Consider attending a meetup at CMWorld 2020, especially those catered to specific communities or Twitter Chats. You can join these digital groups any time, giving you plenty of time to build connections before next year.
A4a: I always try to attend a meetup of one sort or another. This year it was the Tweetup that @CMIContent organized for #CMworld #ContentChat and #TacoChat participants. It’s so much fun to get to meet the folks you Tweet with IRL! https://t.co/COmy8Mb4yG
— Erika Heald | #CMworld Speaker | Consultant (@SFerika) September 9, 2019
A4: The meet-ups were maybe one of the best parts of the conference. We engage each week with each other within Chats etc, so to put a face with a handle and to have conversations with each other is priceless and shows the power of social and many of these Chats #ContentChat
— Bernie Fussenegger #Digital360Chat (@B2the7) September 9, 2019
Schedule your own dinners or meet-ups with folks you don’t typically see.
A4b: I also try to either organize or attend a few interesting dinners with folks I don’t get to see except when I’m in #CLE for #CMworld. As an introvert, you get the urge to hide in your hotel, but the conversations + friends you make over dinner are valuable. #ContentChat https://t.co/JcfScPgpDK
— Erika Heald | #CMworld Speaker | Consultant (@SFerika) September 9, 2019
Q5: The #CMworld trade show floor always gets me excited about how technology can help me+my clients improve our processes, workflows, etc. What is the one product or service you encountered at the event that you can’t wait to try out?
Some shoutouts to Stensul (WYSIWYG email creation), SEMrush (competitive research service for online marketing), and Intrado (communication and network infrastructure services) for appealing to Erika and Michelle. Comment below if you saw any other exciting companies, or if you noticed brands that exemplified some of our best practices for exhibiting.
A5: I’ve already referred clients to @stensul (for WYSIWYG email creation). And I’m inspired to get started using @semrush finally! #ContentChat https://t.co/jd8lYCwVzZ
— Erika Heald | #CMworld Speaker | Consultant (@SFerika) September 9, 2019
A5: I enjoy visiting the vendors on the exhibit floor, too. Always love to see what’s new. I talked with Intrado at length. West was a client of mine, so it was interesting to catch up with them. @WestCorpDC #contentchat
