Content Marketing World (#CMworld) is my favorite conference of the year. And this year, the #ContentChat community came out in full force to join in on the fun—our friend Carmen Hill even won the Community Champion Award! In this chat, we shared some of our favorite takeaways from the one-of-a-kind event and started the countdown for next year.
Do you have #FOMO after seeing how much fun I had with @ladonnajonze + @SuperDeluxeErin + @atxcopywriter at #CMworld last week? Then you'll want to join us for today's #ContentChat conversation at 12 noon Pacific / 3 p.m. Eastern to hear everyone's highlights from the event. pic.twitter.com/QHv0tjalyu

Last week at #CMworld, I ran into a number of #ContentChat peeps, including @PRisUs @atxcopywriter and @todcordill. Join us for today's #ContentChat at 12 noon Pacific / 3 p.m. Eastern to hear some of our favorite takeaways from this one-of-a-kind event. pic.twitter.com/6cDNGO9KAs

Q1: What was your goal for attending CMworld and did you reach it?
Many of us attended to connect (and reconnect) with fellow marketers to network and share ideas.
A1: My goal was to make and solidify connections with other marketers. As many of you know, I definitely managed that! #ContentChat
— Kristen Hicks (@atxcopywriter) September 10, 2018
A1: My goal was to dive back into the conference world (in a content marketing context) in order to gain some new perspectives and meet new people. Important when you primarily work from home. And you know what? Achievement unlocked! #ContentChat

A1) To connect with some of my favorites in the content world (And I did) and to catch up on they most important trends (And I did) #contentchat
— Debbie Schwake (@SpiceDebbie) September 10, 2018
But the conference is also a great place to gain exposure for your company.
A1. We had a booth so based on the variety of people who attend we were going for brand awareness, esp since our rebrand is still relatively new. We had marketers, solutions, and sales folks avail to chat and give demos! #contentchat
— Amanda L (@AmandaJayeL) September 10, 2018
On behalf of our brand, the goal was to meet, connect with, and learn from some of content marketing's brightest minds! and duh, we totally reached that, basically the second I walked in. #contentchat
— Brafton (@Brafton) September 10, 2018
And for the presenters, there was a whole different set of goals for success.
A1: My #1 goal was to ensure that I didn't die or puke during either one of my sessions and I'm happy to report, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! #ContentChat pic.twitter.com/3poUc129JF
— Maureen Jann (@SuperDeluxeMo) September 10, 2018
Regardless of what your goal was, it’s great that you came to the conference with a purpose. Continue setting goals for any conferences you attend to stay focused!
What I'm also excited about is seeing that all of you HAD goals for the event. I think too often people attend conferences without a specific goal in mind to just soak up all the htings. And while that has its benefits, I find a goal to be helpful. #ContentChat
— Erika Heald | Content Marketing Consultant (@SFerika) September 10, 2018
Goals almost help you keep in line and not get distracted…#ContentChat…and of course it feels awesome to meet them!!

Q2: What was something you weren’t expecting that came out of the conference?
Many of the speakers really inspired the crowd, leaving the audience with plenty of tangible takeaways.
A2) I came out of @Allen's session with a ton of ideas around how to better use video—both on and off LinkedIn. And I also came home with some greatly strengthened friendships. #ContentChat https://t.co/QprhdAFnF5

A2. There’s always some speaker that blind-sides me. This year, it was @dewittjones beautiful, inspiring talk on creativity. Glad it was dark, b/c I was a bit teary. #CMWorld #ContentChat https://t.co/eQBYtDsjfy
— Carmen Hill (@carmenhill) September 10, 2018
A2) I wouldn't have guessed that I'd have as much fun at a talk about metaphors as I did, but I should have figured with @dougkessler as speaker. So interesting! I also walked out of sessions with a lot of specific, actionable tips #contentchat

Cleveland continues to be an exciting host city, for locals and non-locals alike, but the travel throws some extra surprises into the mix.
being local is harder than expected. Hotel next year for sure. #contentchat
— Kat (@KatInTheCLE) September 10, 2018
A2: I came away with some insights about where I am in my marketing consultancy, a sense of strength and grit and a new appreciation for 3 hour time differences. LOL #ContentChat
— Maureen Jann (@SuperDeluxeMo) September 10, 2018
A2. My first ever all nighter at an airport was unexpected. #ContentChat
— Tod Cordill (@todcordill) September 10, 2018
I'm pro-Cleveland as well. It helps that I know *all* the best #glutenfree places to eat too! #ContentChat
— Erika Heald | Content Marketing Consultant (@SFerika) September 10, 2018
Whether you were in residence at a booth or free to roam, the #CMworld marketing community makes you feel right at home.
Q2: This is the first conference I've been at without a booth, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Loved how the lack of branding made every connection more meaningful and personal rather than company-focused. #ContentChat
— Aubrey Harper (@Aubrey__Harper) September 10, 2018
Yes, you don't feel alone. Maybe because many of us are alone in our companies, as far as doing what we do, that it feels so great to meet others who do the same thing. #ContentChat
— Emilie Moreland (@writtenbyemilie) September 10, 2018
These chats (this and #CMWorld) make such a difference when at the conference, I feel like I have this secret "in" to the community (that's not really a secret at all) #contentchat
— Kristen Hicks (@atxcopywriter) September 10, 2018
Q3: What do you wish you had done more of at the conference?
The consensus is that we needed a clone, super speed, or unlimited energy to attend more sessions and capture notes or photos.
A3: I wish I had an opportunity to go to more sessions. Next year. This year I spent most of my time prepping for my talks that I felt it dwarfed the learning, which felt like a missed opp. #contentchat
— Maureen Jann (@SuperDeluxeMo) September 10, 2018
A3: I wish I'd taken more pictures of presentations. There are fewer of them available than I'd anticipated and I'm feeling the gaps in my notes. I couldn't write fast enough! #contentchat
— Kristen Hicks (@atxcopywriter) September 10, 2018
A3) Tried to meet more of you all! Feel like so much time was spent waiting in line for sessions… #contentchat
— Debbie Schwake (@SpiceDebbie) September 10, 2018
A3. Apart from sleep, I can’t imagine doing *more* of anything. I just have to accept that it’s impossible to do it all every time. #ContentChat https://t.co/C8b7yPhVzS
— Carmen Hill (@carmenhill) September 10, 2018
A3. I wish I could have seen more #CMWorld sessions, but it wasn't possible. I flagged 3 and even 4 sessions at the same time and had to choose between them. #FirstWorldProblems #ContentChat
— Tod Cordill (@todcordill) September 10, 2018
Q4: What is one thing you’ll do differently the next time you attend/what is something you wish you knew before attending?
Again, time is of the essence, so plan as much as possible to maximize your ability to do and see everything and everyone you can.
A4: Something I'll do next time, carve out more time to go to sessions, make more meetings with colleagues so I can spend a little more 1:1 time with people I want to see. #contentchat
— Maureen Jann (@SuperDeluxeMo) September 10, 2018
A4: I will be more diligent in flagging the sessions I want to attend (even though it sounds like that doesn't necessarily make a difference with long lines). Also, I will check the forecast before I travel and pack more appropriately. The more you know… #ContentChat
— Erin Hryciw |air’•in – her’•shoe| (@SuperDeluxeErin) September 10, 2018
Arriving a day or two early can help you recover from the travel and set up some pre-conference meeting with your friends, and leaving Cleveland later has its advantages.
A4. As far as attending, not sure I’d do anything differently. But one thing I’ll do again is arrive Sunday to have Monday free for meetups & adjust to time zone. But 6 am yoga was *still* hard! #ContentChat https://t.co/gbol3WWaHW
— Carmen Hill (@carmenhill) September 10, 2018
Agreed. I was really glad I showed up a full day before I had to show up for anything. I was able to take most of Tuesday easy rather than being stressed out and tired from the day's travel that night #contentchat
— Kristen Hicks (@atxcopywriter) September 10, 2018
I like flying out the next afternoon too- it can pull a ton of the stress out of trying to get to an airport in a strange city at 5 a.m. Plus, you get a full night’s sleep before heading back to your regular life! #ContentChat
— Rebekah Meyer (@RebekahLMeyer) September 10, 2018
And don’t forget to bring (or find) snacks.
Snacks are a brilliant idea. Next time I think I'll try to hit a market at the beginning of the week and gather supplies to hoard in my room so I don't get hungry-weird as the day wears on. #ContentChat
— Erin Hryciw |air’•in – her’•shoe| (@SuperDeluxeErin) September 10, 2018
Ah yes, next year I am going to pack a TON of healthy + #glutenfree snacks. The food situation was pretty challenging for me. I don't want to eat something if I'm not sure it doesn't have gluten. #ContentChat
