This week #ContentChat was joined by Cathy McPhillips, VP of Marketing for the Content Marketing Institute (CMI). CMI has made great use of content marketing to promote their annual Content Marketing World Conference, and Cathy joined the conversation to share her tips on what works.
Q1: Why should event producers use content marketing as part of their promotion plan?
Content marketing is a great way to build interest in your event before it happens. By sharing content written by, or created in collaboration with your speakers, you show their authority on their topic and, hopefully, leave your audience wanting more.
A1: Help your customers and prospects before you ask them for something in return! Give them valuable content/info. #ContentChat
— Cathy McPhillips (@cmcphillips) August 21, 2017
A1: #eventprofs used to talk about 360/year-round events. Content Marketing is about year-round engagement. #contentchat
— Scott Lum (@ScottLum) August 21, 2017
Content marketing also has the power to turn one-time event attendees into raving brand advocates and a permanent part of your brand community.
A1: Work to create a relationship with your customer that makes them NEED to come see you and your community in person. #ContentChat
— Cathy McPhillips (@cmcphillips) August 21, 2017
A1: Content marketing also creates a lasting connection with your attendees – both new and returning. #ContentChat
— Berrak Sarikaya (@BerrakBiz) August 21, 2017
A1: To add to @cmcphillips point, it also makes future attendees your brand ambassadors. #ContentChat
— Joseph Kalinowski (@jkkalinowski) August 21, 2017
Q2: What are some examples of how to use content marketing to promote your event?
Make it clear where they can go to hear more and dive deeper (i.e. your event).
A2: Attendee & speaker spotlights, tips for making the most of the conference, guest blogs with CTAs to register/hear more. #ContentChat
— Berrak Sarikaya (@BerrakBiz) August 21, 2017
A2: Ebooks with information/quotes/examples from speakers – great way to build reach and increase distribution, too! #ContentChat
— Cathy McPhillips (@cmcphillips) August 21, 2017
A2 clearly let people know what they’ll find at the event- Show what’s in it for them to attend, what others will miss out on! #ContentChat
— LUCYrk (@LUCYrk78) August 21, 2017
Love it! Give the audience a little slice of a topic to get interested in attending the event to get the rest of the scoop. #ContentChat https://t.co/jmboytLZX6
— Erika Heald (@SFerika) August 21, 2017
And don’t forget about empowering your speakers to create and share content as well.
A2: We’ve worked w/speakers to create specific content to share on their/our social channels that include the event CTAs. #ContentChat
— Joseph Kalinowski (@jkkalinowski) August 21, 2017
We do this for our speakers. We make it easy & give them the assets they need. They’re busy, so we try to help them help us! #contentchat
— Cathy McPhillips (@cmcphillips) August 21, 2017
Q3: What are some challenges you see when it comes to content marketing for events?
Many organizations aren’t staffed appropriately to take a content marketing approach for their events.
A3: You probably need dedicated content marketing staff. Most event professionals are focused on managing the physical event #contentchat
— Scott Lum (@ScottLum) August 21, 2017
A3: If you’re relying on speakers to provide content, there can be a bottleneck in the schedule. #ContentChat
— Berrak Sarikaya (@BerrakBiz) August 21, 2017
A3: Bandwidth for creating event content. Usually parsed out among events, product marketing, speakers. #inconsistency #contentchat
— Shelly Lucas (@pisarose) August 21, 2017
A3b: Planning for post event content before the event can put a burden on event owners. Don’t do it and you miss a HUGE opp. #contentchat
— Maureen Jann (@MaureenOnPoint) August 21, 2017
Events involve a number of team members who may not be used to working together, making a focus on clear, consistent team communication a key challenge.
A3 Lack of communication from all those involved. If it’s your event, take charge & communicate so you can get the best content #ContentChat
— Krystal Blais 🔥 (@krystalblais) August 21, 2017
A3. Finding right content actually. So that it’s in flow with the event as well as the audience. Especially when it’s new. #ContentChat
— Chandresh (@thisischandresh) August 21, 2017
A3: Distribution is a critical element. You need to get creative on influencers, paid programs, etc to get content out there! #ContentChat
— Cathy McPhillips (@cmcphillips) August 21, 2017
Q4: What was a pre-event content effort that surprised you in its engagement+effectiveness?
When you deliver your message in an unexpected package, you’re likely to get their attention—and their registration.
A4: I can’t say it surprised me, but I did a pre event campaign with the invitation stuck to a dozen donuts. Amazing. #ContentChat
— Maureen Jann (@MaureenOnPoint) August 21, 2017
Twitter chats are a great event promotion tool, allowing the bonds of friendship and community to form well before the convention center doors open.
A4: Our #CMWorld Twitter chats! We started in June 2013 to help promote our event, and our 200th chat is next week! #ContentChat
— Cathy McPhillips (@cmcphillips) August 21, 2017
A4: By using speakers as guests with topics around their sessions, we helped them, and they helped us build a community. #ContentChat
— Cathy McPhillips (@cmcphillips) August 21, 2017
A4: This helped us generate hundreds of thousands of impressions, create a community and spur interest in our event. #ContentChat
— Cathy McPhillips (@cmcphillips) August 21, 2017
And don’t underestimate the power of getting folks together face-to-face.
A4. Team dinners before the event. Introduced non-mktg folks to Twitter & started a selfie contest. Went viral from there #Contentchat https://t.co/hMbOMIcRTr
— Su Doyle (@sudoyle) August 21, 2017
Q5: Does content marketing have a place during an event?
Your event’s social media backchannels are a powerful content marketing source and tool.
A6: I love that our #CMWorld event hashtag lives 365 days a year. Our community chats all year long, culminating at our event. #ContentChat
— Cathy McPhillips (@cmcphillips) August 21, 2017
A5 The event is content marketing in real time! Hundreds or thousands of creators for you to curate. #contentchat
— Martin Lieberman (@martinlieberman) August 21, 2017
A5: Holy crap yes. Align amazing content with key sessions, boost during social media to align with needs of participants. #contentchat
— Maureen Jann (@MaureenOnPoint) August 21, 2017
A6: We repost pictures (#TBT!), stay in touch with our community (@berrakbiz created a #CMWorld Slack group), and talk offline. #ContentChat
— Cathy McPhillips (@cmcphillips) August 21, 2017
A5 When else will you have so many excellent brains in one place at one time? Make time to create content on-the-spot. #ContentChat
— Erika Heald (@SFerika) August 21, 2017
A5: Content marketing has a place everywhere. They’re coming to your event for a reason, and they’d probably like to hear more. #contentchat
— Gayane Margaryan (@gayanemar) August 21, 2017
Q6: Your event’s over. Now what? How can you use #ContentMarketing to help the event live on?
Events generate a ton of content. If you’re not reusing event content after the fact, you’re missing out.
A6 You can create video snippets, round-up blog posts, e-books, SlideShares and so much more from your event. #ContentChat
— Erika Heald (@SFerika) August 21, 2017
A6 RECAP! Summarize it 4 those who didn’t go. Blog/video reel/slideshows, etc. THEN repurpose it 4 new audience, various SMs #contentchat https://t.co/Nc8iewwFJG
— Erin Johnson🌐 (@mediamaidcfl) August 21, 2017
A6: Recap best questions w/answers; Invite people to tag themselves in photos afterward; Publish event reviews and post them #ContentChat
— Joanne Masterson (@attnmachines) August 21, 2017
Don’t miss the opportunity to turn those attendees into year-round participants in your community.
A6: Having a community platform where people can reconnect, discuss critical topics and stay in touch is a good place to start. #ContentChat
— Maureen Jann (@MaureenOnPoint) August 21, 2017
Yes! Don’t just pack up your tent & go home. Ride the momentum to drive conversion / cement relationships #ContentChat https://t.co/5v8aAbzJdv
— Su Doyle (@sudoyle) August 21, 2017
A6: Last event I attended had a manned video station where participants were invited to leave video comments/reviews #ContentChat
— Joanne Masterson (@attnmachines) August 21, 2017
A6 Why should the event end at all? I love that the CMI event hashtag #CMWorld is evergreen and used all year long. #contentchat
— Martin Lieberman (@martinlieberman) August 21, 2017
And don’t forget to follow-up on partnership or sales opportunities.
A7: Create easy, casual follow-up notes (w/ pix ) for sales. We used cute photos from our customer dinner -also 4 company news #ContentChat https://t.co/cpDO5W1Hjp
— Su Doyle (@sudoyle) August 21, 2017
Q7: Which conferences or events do a good job of incorporating #contentmarketing into the promo plans?
Not surprisingly, many marketing conferences embrace event content marketing.
A7 Hands-down, @cmcphillips and the @CMIContent team KILL IT at using #contentmarketing as a core part of #CMworld #ContentChat
— Erika Heald (@SFerika) August 21, 2017
A7: #MProfsB2b & #SMMW17 do great jobs w/ this as well. As expected, marketing events use #contentmarketing to promote events. #ContentChat
— Cathy McPhillips (@cmcphillips) August 21, 2017
A7 Most of the events that are oriented around content marketing are great – CMI, Hubspot, Marketo, PCMA #contentchat
— Scott Lum (@ScottLum) August 21, 2017
But other industries are also embracing the power of event content marketing.
A7: Have to shout out @ColorCommntwk‘s conference and @Blavity‘s EmpowerHer conference. #contentmarketing #ContentChat https://t.co/LNI0f6msAx
